What's new

Windows 10 has a built-in keylogger, and allows your facebook 'friends' access to your wifi.

...among other things, like having ads on the start menu, having no option to turn off sending your data to MS, and no way to turn off automatic updates. I just found this now. If some of this is not the whole story, then I'd be interested in hearing about it/discussion (not trying to be a scare monger, but this is a little concerning to me).

Think before upgrading. See this pic for more info

FUD by the uninformed.

"If you know you're in my Skype contacts list feel free to park in front of my house with your Windows 10 PC. But you'll have to bring your own Wi-Fi, because Wi-Fi Sense won't let you connect to my network. That option is off by default for every network, as you can see by the Not Shared status message under each one.

And you have to very consciously enable sharing for a network. It's not something you'll do by accident."

Are these from your install? I've been running Windows 10 on multiple computer and have never seen an Ad, everything else is clearly stated in the Privacy Policy....

That makes me feel a little better. I'm wondering about the updates as well. I completely disable mine because of bad experiences of "snoozing" the updates until I forget and lose something I was doing. Not to mention the updates that break some drivers or other features. Is there really no way to turn off updates?

^^I was too slow. That's at least a temporary solution

I haven't seen any ads except in Solitaire.

Wi-Fi Sense is enabled by default, but you still have to explicitly tell Windows to activate it for each separate network you join. It won't share your password unless you tell it to in the wi-fi setup. The password is not transmitted to your friends even if you do elect to share via Wi-Fi Sense, only an encrypted hash that enables internet access but no computer discovery on the network. I'm not worried about Microsoft having my wi-fi password. Apple does something very similar and I haven't heard any complaints. It stores your wi-fi passwords on their servers and restores them to your phone if you do a reset or get a new phone. You are just as much at risk from Apple's services as you are from Microsoft.

Mandatory updates are to ensure everyone has the latest security patches. Microsoft will not provide product support unless the version is current and this is a way to prevent security breaches and virus propagation.

The keylogger issue is no more of a problem than on Android or iOS. Any time you are typing in the search boxes you will see suggested terms start to appear. They are all sending keystrokes under certain conditions to try and predict what you are trying to do.

The telemetry that is collected under the Basic setting is not going to contain any personal information. If you read the description you will see that only under option 3 will anything be sent that would be personal information.

Real time protection is another item to try and prevent viruses and malware from causing problems. I'm not sure on this one, but I would assume like in Windows 8 you could install some other antivirus program like Norton and it would take the place of Microsoft's product.

Someone went to great lengths to instil fear of Windows 10 in people by creating that picture. It is full of half-truths and twisted facts.

If you snooze updates and are prone to forget about them and are then surprised when the updates eventually install, if you disable them, now you will just forget even longer and run an unpatched system online.

You can change the options through Group Policy to act more or less like it did in 7 and 8. However if you remain in the Insider program that may or may not work correctly.

Can't you turn that off too? could have sworn during install there was an option to stop from MS collecting inking, voice, and text data.

Sound like you might have some adware agent installed... Id do a scan with malwarebytes.

You can very effectively block ads and malware with a modified HOSTS file and it works for all programs not just browsers.

I'm just using the file didn't do any extras.
Yep, I use this hosts file too. On my PCs, iPads, iPhones etc. you do need a jailbroken iOS though.

I also recommend that you stop using Facebook. All fb domains are also blocked in my hosts file.
