Has anyone got the maps app working?
The app loads but no streets are showing.
I have tried altering brightness but have had no luck.
Is this a known issue?

I recently read where there's a known issue with Maps - same problem you are all describing. It's apparently in the pipeline to be corrected.

Here is how to fix your Maps app to show roads (fix applies to NVIDIA processors):

Does that workaround apply to the Surface? What Surface has a NVIDIA processor?

Workaround only works for Desktop devices with NVIDIA processors. Open NVIDIA Control Panel, select Manage 3D settings. Update the Preferred Graphics Processor to “High-performance NVIDIA processor” (detailed instructions below, if needed). For other devices, unfortunately there is no known workaround. We are working hard to get the fix to your device as soon as possible.

Start, Nvidia

If the fix can apply to you, the NVIDIA Control Panel will appear in your search results. It may take a moment for the Control Panel to appear.

Some Surface Books have Nvidia Graphics Cards physically located within the keyboard. When the Surface Books are in tablet mode (detached keyboard), it uses on-board Intel Integrated graphics. No Surface nor Surface Pros have Nvidia Graphics cards, but have Intel Integrated graphics.

The Microsoft Maps app not showing roads in roads view is a known issue that they are working on for the new Integrated graphics.
