Ok. How about older models of Surface? Like Surface 3?

Same thing... Should be fine. At the time I was still using a Surface 3 (non pro), the 512GB cards were way too expensive, but I would definitely give it a shot if you have the need for some additional storage.

On the other hand: where I wanted at least 128GB additional storage to have my music with me at all times, nowadays I use Spotify, Netflix, OneDrive and there is no issue at all anymore...
