i7 benchmarks & tests

another problem I found during the test. I started 3dmarks test and realized the sound might bother others so I plugged in my 3.5mm earbuds, you know what? it didn't stop the sound! later I tried it again when playing video seems fine but there was a few seconds delay. at this point seems sp3 switches the audio output by software, when cpu is fully loaded (like running 3dmarks) it can't take care of your headphone!

anyone want to try this on their sp3?
 
Damn it. I think I want the i7 now.

This user ran a 10min CPU stress test on his i7 256GB

His results were the CPU temp stabilized at around 75C and stayed at 2.29Ghz

With my i5 SP3 running the same 10min test, it stabilized at 65C after 5 min and CPU stayed at 1.5Ghz.

Why is the i5 version getting throttled down to a lower CPU temp??
 
Honestly? I suspect it's internal firmware settings and fan profiles... unless these are some ungodly binned i7's.

I just can't see them using different cooling solutions for the i7 vs the i5. It complicates mass fabrication and raises the price [having to have extra piecesfabricated].

Of course, now that I think about it, given the room for underclocking potential, i'm wondering if MS did this on purpose to make the i7 look like the better performer simply to sell more of the expensive parts?

Perhaps the performance and benchmarking comparisons we should be looking at are not SP3 i5 vs i7, but SP2 4300u vs SP3 i7...

Anandtech has done that fairly extensively... see their SP3 review which includes comparison with SP2. I think they did an excellent job.

The value of comparative user testing is to help people with their unit and use cases ... is it performing as expected or way off. variances need investigation ... are other apps installed with background processes... DisplayLink USB monitors ... web browsing and office work should be fine. with games and graphics intense process your mileage will vary, some may be fine and others not and people will disagree on what is and isn't good for them.

Note: If you upload the PassMark results to their site the whole community can see it averaged out across all runs until your trial expires but the results stay. The results are searchable by CPU, GPU, manufacturer etc.
 
I just did 2 benchmarks. One before undervolting and 1 after. 340 vs 352. Processor rarely dipped below 2.29 frequency with highest throttling at 35%. Hope this helps some people!

I use Handbrake to compress a Blu-ray movie at my regular settings. I don't have SP2 or SP3 i5, but I have a SP1 and my Ivy Bridge i7 based Thinkpad as comparison.
