Does lowering resolution conserve battery life?

No at all. Controlling brightness will give you more juice.

Lowering resolution to conserve energy only works when you build the machine with a lower resolution screen, then it would have fewer pixels to drive. Once you build it with a high resolution screen you can't really not light up the pixels. imagine if you cut the display resolution in half and it turned off every other pixel. Right idea, wrong implementation.

With programs that need to render text (read: almost any program), that would significantly lighten the load of the GPU.
