BSOD from exfat.sys

I just started getting BSOD every time while using Edge for MSN photo stories in full screen. The only very recent change I made was to change my Windows background folder for slide show to a folder with jpg files on the mSD card formatted in exFAT.
Is this the cause? Should I format the mSD card as NTFS?

Update: I moved the files to C: and the BSODs stopped.
I have no problem opening files on the mSD card formatted as exFAT but evidently Windows does when used as slideshow backgrounds.

Is there a fix or should I format the mSD card as NTFS?

Occasionally, I had corrupted exFAT files, successfully fixed after check. Then, I reformated to NTFS and no problems since.
