The other day I spilled coffee on my Type cover. As thoughts of having to stop by Staples to buy a new one on my way home from work, I ran to a sink and ran water across it to wash off the coffee. I then swung it around violently to shake off as much water as possible, and then used the edge of a paper towel and tooth pick the get the water soaked up from between all the keys. I then placed it on a warm radiator, turning it frequently, to dry what remained. Once dry I snapped it on to my Surface Pro, and it works.
I later heard rubbing alcohol is better to use than water since it evaporates faster and less likely to cause corrosion later, but I had none handy at that time.
I'm not advising washing off a Type cover this way, but it got the coffee out and it still works.
