If this happens again, you can tell if your Surface Pro 3 is actually still powered on (running) even though the screen is black, by touching the Windows logo on the screen. If the SP3 is running, you will feel the haptic feedback.
To power off, hold down the power button as long as it takes to not feek this.

Exactly the same thing to me!!! after the Last update... same method to wake it up.
