I have connected my Surface Pro 2017 to a D3100 as well and I was really happy with how that worked. Still have one question though.... perhaps you have an idea on that: does a dock have some sort of graphical card built in? Or does it just use the graphics card of the computer connected?

Same thing... Should be fine. At the time I was still using a Surface 3 (non pro), the 512GB cards were way too expensive, but I would definitely give it a shot if you have the need for some additional storage. On the other hand: where I wanted at least 128GB additional storage to have my music...
