I'm on the same version on both my Ultrabook and Surface RT, I have it going directly to My Music rather than opening up to Xbox Music Home.

I am not sure what the different between the paid version and the free version is.
I paid a year up front (I always used Zune that gave me 10 song credits a month)
I am a little lost. Can I actually download songs without buying, to listen off line? I can't figure out how it works.

Yeah, anything you add to your collection should always be available. I have things that randomly won't play at times though. I think it might actually be something going on with music on the SD card though. Restarting seems to help this.
