Any tweaks or settings to get a little more out of the speakers?

You're best bet would be amplified bluetooth speakers. Those 'monster' speakers in the Surface try hard but really haven't got a chance. I bought a little bluetooth receiver to plug into a Logitech speaker system I already had... BOOM.

I agree. I just dont want another device to carry around and have to worry about charging =(

Have you tried right clicking on the speaker icon on the bottom right, opening playback devices, speakers, properties, levels, and increasing it to 100%?

Use DFX Audio Enhancer. It will boost the volumen substantially. Google it

VLC player allows you to boost the output volume to 200%. It sounds like crap.

Yet another example of someone buying something and then wanting it to do something it is not designed for and is not capable of doing. Why not be happy with what you have. The speakers are as loud as they are, if you need louder and don't want to carry a Bluetooth speaker, then you should have bought a different device.
