Start button and keyboard not working

After downloading the most recent updates, the start button on the surface and the attachable keyboard stopped working. When I try to use the button it vibrates and makes a ding sound but nothing else happens. With the keyboard, the mouse works but the same ding noise happens when I try to type.
I have tried deleting the updates but that didn't work. I have also tried restarting the surface. Any other suggestions are welcome.

and when you press the window logo button with the keyboard off, does it still make a ding?
