You've neglected the best part of the Varidrive, which is that it incorporates DisplayLink's USB to display technology. So you can use this Varidrive to output video onto EITHER a HDMI or VGA device. This is in addition to the DisplayPort -> video output on your Surface. In other words, with the Varidrive, you can have two external monitors attached to your Surface.
Most of the issues with the Varidrive are from when it was first released.
