Ok, I went Cowboy on this....

Tried all the suggested solutions, still couldn't do the update.

Figured, if too many inf files is the problem, why not get rid of some?
Went to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and moved anything older that 5/15 to a temp directory.
Ran the update, and viola! 10122 installed!

Moved the files back (bit tricky due to permission issues)

Then had to update drivers in device manager since several things were showing up as unknown.

So far, so good. Everything seems back to normal.

They should call windows 10 windows 7.1, because that's what it is.

8.1 has been very friendly to both touch and desktop. 7.1 is a desktop OS only.

why do you say desktop only? Even in it's very rough state, which seems to largely neglect the touch side of the experience, i find it perfectly usable as a tablet other than for the slightly small text etc (would be nice if upon entering tablet mode, buttons etc re-sized to be more like the button size et in MUI IE on 8.1)

Went ahead and created an ISO from the ESD, and clean installed. So, anybody else have to create a local account to complete the install? First time I've had to do that.

Edit: And, fun: the Intel HD driver hasn't installed, so I'm stuck with the basic driver. Dammit.

Yup. But surprisingly first saw it with 10074 yesterday when installing using the 10074 iso instead of just an update gave me the exact same issue. Go through setup, enter windows account details, setup wifi etc, then it restarts and takes you back through the process again and finally asks you to create a local account which the machine then treats as the default account.

How is everyone finding battery life? With both 10074 and 10122, my machine either stays on (doesn't go to sleep), or goes to sleep then wakes up when the type 2 cover moves (e.g., in my bag).

Okay. So, yes: no Intel HD drivers installed on my 10122 clean install. Not showing up on update. Can't install the drivers from the Intel site (system doesn't meet minimum specs).

What now?

Mine doesn't go to sleep either. The screen goes black, but the backlights are still obviously on (can see a bit of ghosting at each side). No way on God's green Earth that I'd trust this thing in a bag.

Okay, it's official: I'm going back to Win8.1 until a much better build is released. And I'm sticking to it this time.

I just did a clean install form ISO and still getting the black screen sleep of death.
This release is just way too buggy. Going back to 8.1 tonight.

Two simple questions (that i can't solve :p)

1. How do i chance IE to use google as the search engine. I go through the routine, go to http://www.iegallery.com/en-gb/Addons/Details/813 but i cannot click the button, nothing happens. Bing utterly sucks imo and rarely gives me anything but a worthless set of results for my search.

2. can i get file explorer to go straight to "my computer" instead of quick access/recent files. I want to access my hard drive. I couldn't care less about some recently viewed pictures or videos etc. I can add my computer to the start menu (which i do not ever use as have no use for tiles) but there is not an option for pinning it to the taskbar.

Here is how to make Google the default search engine for Internet Explorer despite recent bias for Bing:
- Install the Google Toolbar , refuse to make Google my home page, but confirm to make Google my search engine
- Uninstall the Google Toolbar by clicking the icon of a wrench on its far right.

Great workaround but I sincerely hope that's not the way.

Had the same issue. Go to device manager, find display adapter and expand it, right click on the generic display driver. Go into it and disable it. Reboot and check for updates and Windows will finally install the Intel driver.
