There is now an alarm clock app, HD Alarm Clock, that works in the background and also with the screen of the surface turned off. The only thing you need to do is to let the app run in "night mode". In day mode, it will just display toast notifications if the app is closed or not in the foreground. However, notifications won't work with the screen off.
