When unplugged, my SP3 often turns off when it should sleep

You can try either a refresh or a factory reset, if neither of those improves it I would take it to a MS store for a replacement, because that isn't normal.

Is it hibernating or actually shutting down?

This is probably my biggest annoyance, that I'm constantly confronted with. I have no idea how to tell if it's sleeping or hibernating.

Mine only does this when not plugged in. Never when plugged in - it always sleeps then.

Anyone has any update on this issue?

Mine SP3 seems to be exhibiting the same problem. When I pressed the POWER button just now, it Shutdown. It's running on battery. I'll try again later tonite when it's plugged into the dock to see if it's behaving the same way.
