Perhaps something else is waking it up. My wireless mouse when set on the arm of a chair will wake up the surface just from me moving. I have to turn off the mouse to keep the tablet a sleep. But once I did hear the fan kick on, so I assume if it is hot enough and in sleep mode, it still protects itself.
