Pen not working at all - Surface Pro

Hi. So I didn't use my pen for awhile, maybe a couple of weeks, and when I went to use it again it didn't register at all. I've tried messing around with the settings, installing all the updates, reinstalling the pen drivers... nothing seems to work. Any ideas? I think I've tried all of the approaches that google searches have revealed with no luck. Should I just assume that there's a problem with the pen itself?

You didn't mention messing with the battery(s)

ok, maybe I'm just stupid, but I didn't think the pen had a battery.

Wait... I have the first Surface Pro not a SP3.

Yeah I wasn't aware the original pen had a battery? Must admit it's something I've never thought about though! But, it doesn't mention it in the Microsoft article about it...
