Solved PayPal/Hotmail issue

Ok, that didn't go far... but lets try another Hotmail.com and also try a site you can get to.
Note you can.copy text out of the command prompt using the edit menu select all then copy. just do a *cls* (to clear the screen) command to start then do the tracert and then copy

here's what I get for Hotmail.com (results for paypal are a little more difficult to follow)

Can you ping Hotmail.com? I can and get 100% response.

Also I'd try just changing your DNS to Google's and test that 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Also, on the iPad are you using the Paypal app or going on the site through Safari?

From the previous trace you got to
IP Location
us.gif
United States San Jose Equinix Inc.
Resolve Host nix2-br01.net.ebay.com
Whois Server whois.arin.net
IP Address 206.223.116.146

What Antivirus and Firewall do you have installed??? Although you previously said you tried before setup it might be good to temporarily disable it to see if there's any change.

We know you got there from another location... so I'm thinking there's an issue between the Surface and router but don't want to jump to any conclusions. I assume this router was provided by the ISP. Any chance of getting a replacement with a *new* or *newer* router as this baby is very old.

Also on your iPad you can install FREE Trace to do a similar task as Tracert although it works a little differently your results wont exactly match. Just for laughs there's also VTrace for the iPad which plots locations on a Map. :)

Another tool that might be useful is HttpWatch. there is a free iPad App HttpWatch Basic and free HttpWatch version you can install from the web that works with IE on the Surface Pro. http://www.httpwatch.com/
That might yield some clues as to how far we are getting and were to look next depending on what the results are.

No antivirus or firewall has been installed by me- i have only had this SP3 for 2 days. Not sure if Microsoft have any on the SP3 from new>?

Modem is mine not provided by ISP.

I downloaded this - have no idea how to use it. But when i put www.paypal.com in the address bar and hit enter the little box down the bottom left (which i am assuming is httpwatch) reads 'Resolving Host'

Your ping times seem out of whack and fairly high. That may indicate a problem with the router or your service provider. Try pinging the IP directly like PING 150.101.32.32

Ok if all you got was 'Resolving Host' that seems to point to DNS although its curious how its working with then iPad. I agree the response times are quite high for even a response from your ISPs first hop.

But before we change it we can test from the command prompt using "nslookup"
First try with your DNS as is
Nslookup paypal.com
It should respond with something like:
Server: Wireless_Broadband_Router.home
Address: 192.168.1.1

non-authoritative answer:
name: paypal.com
addresses: 66.211.169.3
66.211.169.66
-----------

Then try with the two Google DNS servers.
nslookup paypal.com 8.8.8.8

nslookup paypal.com 8.8.4.4

If your regular DNS is resolving paypal.com but we might try changing it anyway... instructions to come...

I am at work so will try pinging the IP directly and also try 'nslookup' when i get home now.

I was just looking at new modem routers online and have a question- can i use an ADSL2/ADSL2+ modem if I only get ADSL 1 at home?? Sorry for the silly questions but better I find this out before i buy the wrong thing. This is the one i was looking at http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/tenda-w300d-wireless-n300-modem-router-tew300d

Thanks everyone for your help :)

I just thought of something else as I was putting the DNS instructions together ...
Try turning off the IPv6 in WiFi Properties, it's not going to work with an old router anyway and might cause a problem.

1. At the Desktop Press and Hold or right click the Windows Icon in the lower left corner, then select Control panel from the popup menu
2. Tap or Click "Network and Internet"
3. Tap or Click "Network and Sharing Center"
4. Tap or Click "Change Adapter Settings"
5. Press and Hold or Right Click the Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties
6. Scroll the dialog box and uncheck "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)"
wifi properties.PNG
OK or Close that and try connecting to paypal

To change the DNS follow the above steps 1-5
6. Scroll the dialog box and select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"
7. Tap or Click Properties button
DNS settngs2.PNG
8. Tap or Click "Use the following DNS server addresses"
9. Enter 8.8.8.8 in the first box
10. Enter 8.8.4.4 in the second box
11. Tap or Click OK.

See how that works...
