I have had no overheating issue with charging my SP 5 (2017) 256 Gb 8Gb RAM, core i5. Have had my SP 5 a couple of months now.
Does fan kick in if too hot in your core i7 when charging?
I can imagine that change power settings tot standard (not performance) could help prevent overheating.
Intensive use, like gaming, of your surface pro while charing will likely heat up the system. I think that is inevitable. I think it's better to charge and top up first then use it in performance mode, to prevent overheating while charging.
