Java and Store on the Surface 3

Hello everyone,

I have 2 questions (sorry for my english) about the Surface 3.

1) Are we obliged to use the store to install a new software ? Or can we install it like a personal computer ?

2) A friend told me it's impossible to use Java on the Surfaces but i'm a JavaEE developer. Is it possible on the Surface 3 ? I want to buy it for programming.

The Surface 3 is running an x86 Intel ATOM Cherry Trail SoC so it supports legacy software, but I wouldn't recommend trying to use it for Development Work as the ATOM is a low end SoC. the Surface Pro 3 is better development machine.

Thanks for your response. JavaEE can be installed on the Surface Pro 3 ? My friend told me the problem was Surfaces runs on Windows RT. That's why many software (and java) are don't compatible with it.

Your friend is misinformed.

The Surface Pro models have always run the full x86/x64 Windows.

The Surface RT and Surface 2 ran Windows RT, those are both discontinued although still available from resellers.

The new Surface 3 is an x86/x64 platform that runs full Windows.

I would agree the Surface 3 might be underpowered for development... you would need the 4GB/128GB version at the least, then it might handle light development. YMMV or be poor.
