Headphone jack problem

I bought my Surface Pro several months ago and absolutely love it. Just last night I started having a strange problem while watching something with my earbuds plugged in.

While I think the connection was fine because I could hear the content perfectly, my Surface kept on losing it's hold on the fact there was something plugged into the headphone jack. Although it's sporadic and intermittent, I'm getting a plethora of balloon pop-ups, along with the associated sound effects, that something's been plugged into the jack. After a while it's reallllly annoying when I'm trying to watching something.

Anyone else experience this? Or, have any ideas?

First thing is to try another set of headphones and see if the fault follows the headphones or the Surface.
