Why not use a Cloud service like skydrive on your phone and then skydrive on your Surface to view your photos.

so I plugged in my iphone 4s, it has a passcode on it, so I made sure to unlock it first. I saw the DCIM folder and all the photos/videos on it. I can also copy them to the surface desktop.
SO for me, just make sure you have the iphone on the home screen and then plug in the usb to the surface
In that youtube video, he didn't have it at the home screen..But plugged in the iphone at the lockscreen
