    Surface laptop not that popular?

I bought an SL3 last year, and I love it. I have a Surface Dock 2 at home, where I have a printer and a bunch of external drives hooked up, and a Surface Dock 2 at the office, where the main interface is to a printer. That single magnetic connection to everything is very nice.

Why Did You Buy Your Surface Pro and How Do You Use It?

I think I've answered this at some point in the past few years... In late 2019, I was making plans to travel to Portugal. I wanted to take a machine along, but I wanted a minimal machine, with a plan to work using online tools. I bought a used Macbook Air and just hated it. Likely there's...

Type Cover firmware failure, any news?

Reporting back. The Arteck cover works fine, with one proviso. If you want to flip it around and use the Surface as a tablet, turn off the keyboard first, since it doesn't understand that it's been flipped. Otherwise, the battery lasts just about forever and I've had no problems with the BT...

    USB-C Charging and Overheating?

The fact that it happens in lots of machines from different manufacturers doesn't excuse it. If the traces on the circuit board are so small as to be unable to reasonably handle the current that the machine may be expected to draw, then it's bad engineering. Granted that I worked in...

    USB-C Charging and Overheating?

If that's so, that's rather poor engineering. In fact, it's EXTREMELY poor engineering, since the product is designed to charge from USB-C.

    USB-C Charging and Overheating?

This implies that the cable and connector would be hot, but they're not. The laptop itself is hot, and the fan isn't working to cool the connector as its temp is not elevated. It could be the battery, however...if the battery is using the extra current to speed-charge. however, the machine is...

    USB-C Charging and Overheating?

Since Day 1, I've been running my SL3 with a USB-C hub to charge it. The fans are nearly always running, and the case is always hot. This past weekend, I charged it using a Surface Connect power supply, and the fans were silent. I've since verified that with another power supply. Does anyone...

    Firmware Updates (July 23)

Yesterday, my SL3 updated its firmware. See: Surface Laptop 3 update history That's fine, and I have had no problems so far. However, I am curious to know exactly what was done to the machine. According to the link (above), the July 23 update "Improves USBC performance" and "Improves...

USB hub for multiple devices - Surface Pro 3

That one would have the same problem--it doesn't come with a power supply--something like this ought to work...

USB hub for multiple devices - Surface Pro 3

It won't work without a power supply. That model can accept external power, but doesn't come with the power supply for the hub, which is what you need.

USB hub for multiple devices - Surface Pro 3

Metalman's question was the same as I was going to ask. If the hub isn't powered, and if a device (like an external HDD) draws any significant amount of power, you're going to be out of luck. I assume from your description that the BT keyboard and mouse do work. Assuming that's the case, plug...

    So... Windows 11!

You can enable TPM in what we used to call the BIOS menu. Get into that on startup and you should be able to enable it there.

    Windows 10 Pro Problems

Strictly in my experience, Win10 Home is no slower than Win10 Pro. In fact, with the omission of one or two things, I'm reasonably certain it's identical. Have you installed all of the updates?

    So... Windows 11!

My guess is WDDM. But it seems to me that there ought to be a way around that...

    So... Windows 11!

I should point out, though, that my SP3 is the absolutely minimal machine I use for travel--i3/4/64. So it may well be that an SP3 with an i5 or i7 will update to Win11, even though mine *sob* won't.

    So... Windows 11!

I ran the compatibility tool, and it looks like NO WINDOWS 11 FOR ME (at least not on my SP3--it'll run just fine on my SL3). It would be nice to know which part of my machine fails the requirements, but the CT doesn't give that, so... I do plan to go to Win 11 on my Surface Laptop pretty quickly.
