The symptoms look identical to this. One of the comments notes that it is likely due to conflicting drivers. I wonder if I update the drivers first after a reset if that will fix it.

OK I might have to give this a go. Earlier today I used the recovery boot menu to reset windows (but kept personal files). It worked and updated fine, but on booting after the first restart I got the problem again. Am trying to use the start-up repair option in the recovery boot mode for now.
