At least it gave a sensible error message. TechNet forums have various threads - some say that a full wipe and reinstall selecting EN-US fixed it. I'm not sure I fancy a full wipe and reinstall just for the preview.

There's quite a few reports of that issue. There was mention of it being fixed in a recent update, but for me the problem persisted.

As with most things, it's worth what someone will pay for it. Maybe have a look at what prices similar ones are being traded for?

I admire anyone who attempts such upgrades. But I agree, it can hardly be called "successful" if it's that broken now. He might be able to fit twice as many movies/photos/whatever on it, but has less than halved the ease of interacting with the device.
