CPU seemingly stuck at 2.49 GHz since Jan. updates

Great! Glad that worked out. I should have added that even with Hyper-V enabled, if I wasn't actually running the OS in the VM (in my case, FreeBSD), I didn't see a major impact on battery life. According to powercfg /batteryreport, the estimated overall battery life is 9:37, to me that's not...

CPU seemingly stuck at 2.49 GHz since Jan. updates

Very interesting! That exact number, 2.49, has been the CPU speed displayed on my system as well. However, I know exactly what happened. In the default configuration, when running in "balanced" or "power saver" plans, when quiescent the CPU speed would settle at 0.75 GHz, and as loaded it...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Sure, makes sense. Some people have turned off hibernation globally, e.g., setting the registry key-value to 0, etc. Another idea is using only hibernation, not sleep, to minimize the problems. The common denominator seems to be getting the computer to act predictably. It's failing to be...

SP2 Doesn't sleep just shuts off

Problems with sleep/hibernation have been happening for months. Some recent difficulties are attributed the notorious Dec 10 FW distribution which caused major misbehavior on SP2's. My first SP2 was afflicted, showing strange and random awakening from sleep. Mid-January the store agreed to an...

SP2 Doesn't sleep just shuts off

You might want to check the power option "plans". In the "advanced" settings dialog, under the "Sleep" heading, there's an entry for "Hibernation" where you can set the time until it kicks in running on battery vs. plugged in. The defaults are 60 and 180 min respectively, but of course it's...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Sometimes you have to shut it down. Flying on any scheduled airline, the explicit instruction is to turn it off, sleep is not acceptable. Sleep mode still uses battery power (if not on AC), so there are circumstances that a full shut down is desirable. If the SP2 is going to be unused for a...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Waking from sleep (and I think hibernate as well) will not show the high CPU usage. Nor will restarting the computer. It only shows with a full shutdown, wait 15 sec, then boot up. If mSD card in slot and Realtek sound driver enabled, the CPU will be high. Sleep/wake will quiet the high...

    Best compact USB 3.0 hub

I've not seen any tiny ones, but I did buy a small one. I've resigned myself to carrying the USB 3.0 cable, but at least I have a fairly short one. The hub is sold by Targus, has 4 device ports. It also has an (optional) external power supply, which I don't carry with the computer--the power...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Well, that answers the question. Similar effect to disabling the sound driver, then re-enabling it. Strange behavior indeed.

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Interesting. Engages the sound driver, which is a "player" in the puzzle. However, I don't have an xbox, or mp3's on my SP2. But I will be curious to try it as soon as I have the opportunity. One question, did you have to keep it playing or are you saying you could play it briefly and...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

The processor over-utilization is a complex problem, showing up under certain conditions, which so far have been demonstrated to include at least all of these: Booting up from full shut down state. At booting up, a microSD card is inserted in the slot Realtek sound driver is enabled. It is...

speed of wifi is slow all of a sudden?

I've also noticed mediocre, and inconsistent, WiFi performance with the built adapter. Typically, at home, the status dialog says 65mbps, but occasionally will show 130mbps or something in between. Sometimes, it will get "stuck" with "limited" connection and refuse to reconnect normally. Not...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

OK. You got it. Here's what I did. Computer fully shut down. mSD card in slot. Power on. Log in. Task Manager -> CPU 33%. Open Device Manager. Sound drivers: Realtek: enabled->disabled. Task Manager -> CPU 1%. Sound drivers: Realtek: disabled->enabled. Task Manager -> CPU 0%...

    UEFI/Embedded Controller/Aggregator Firmware drivers won't install

Can't say I know a whole lot about the drivers you describe. However, according to device manager on my SP2, all but the UEFI drivers are old (dated 2013-09-06 or 2013-09-27) so I'm guessing are the same as when the SP2 was released in October 2013. The UEFI is from 2013-12-20, but since my...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Hard to argue with the notion that it's not enough to have a good idea, but there must also be careful, thorough, effective embodiment of a good idea. I have no doubt the SP2 was a good idea. You express many doubts about the quality of its implementation. Not a trivial matter to those of...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Absurd to have to avoid using an mSD card in the slot designed for it! But I find it IS possible. After cold boot and CPU at >20%, just put the SP2 in sleep state, then wake it up. Check Task Manager. CPU will be around 0%. Try it and tell us what you find out.

usb 3 hub with gigabit ethernet

No direct experience with those items, but I do have a USB 3.0 hub (no ethernet), which works just fine with various external drives, etc. I do have a USB D-Link wireless adapter, quite an inexpensive model, which very consistently outperforms the built-in WiFi adapter by quite a margin...

Do ALL SP2s suffer from hi CPU utilization when idle due to faulty audio drivers?

Wondering exactly how you tested the mSD card issue on your SP2? I've found the CPU revving (>=25% CPU utilization) when starting the SP2 from full power off, but not otherwise, e.g., waking from sleep, or doing a "restart". Not sure that the characteristics of the card or its contents have...

    1/18/14 Firmware Issue 4300U Processor

There are some distinct conditions, start up from powered off, wake from sleep, and restart, which seem to involve different hardware/software systems and may not show the same effects like you're describing. Might help diagnose the problem to try it in these various scenarios (and maybe some...
