    Best Prepaid Mobile Broadband Plan/Device

I use a Virgin Mobile Sierra Wireless Pro 3g/4g wireless hotspot. I'm grandfathered in on a $35 per month 2gb 3g, and unlimited 4g (up to 10gb then throttled) plan. Works perfectly either wireless or plugged in to a usb port. Battery lasts about 4 hours, same as my Surface Pro 1 lasts when busy...

    Newbie battery question

Most laptops will function perfectly with no battery, but plugged in for power, as long as the cmos battery is still good, that's usually what gives out in a 3 or 4 year period. I'm not sure if the surface has a cmos battery, or has all settings in firmware, but a non-removable battery could be...

    Hard reset

Haven't tried it with windows 8, but Petr Nordahl's password reset cd should allow you to reset or clear the password for the built in administrator account, or any other account. you will need to boot to the bios settings, clear the uefi boot, and the protected mode boot settings, and use the...

    Restoring a system image

I know there are ways that pre-install images can be created using microsoft's free deployment software for IT experts. You can set up an image to install Windows and some extra software can be included in the .wim file. It will need to have the necessary drivers, on top of the ones provided...

    Restoring a system image

I suppose you could enter the bios on your surface and disable uefi, and protected boot, it might work then, but if you turn uefi back on to get rid of the red boot screen, you will run into the license problem again. Also could have issues if the new replacement surface has any different...

System Image Backup fails in Surface Pro Win 8.1 with an error

I regularly use the system image backup on my SP1, windows 8.1.1, and have restored an image couple of times. I use a 500gb toshiba external usb2 harddrive, and the restore was done from windows, didn't have to use my repair/restore dvd I created back when the SP1 was new. All I had to do after...

    Apps unistalled / can re-install

Swipe up on the metro start screen, or click the little down arrow if using a mouse to get to the complete app and programs listing, see if the app is listed there. If it is, right click, or touch and hold to get the menu, and select pin to start, that will place it back on the start screen, and...

    Weather app live tile alert

I haven't had a bit of trouble with the weather app on my SP1. I wonder if it's because I have my home location set? I know I get the red bar alert on the first screen, and can click it to read the alert....

    Restoring a system image

Your real issue is the windows license key doesn't match between the uefi one and the system image you're trying to re-store. That's why it's asking for a recovery dvd, when you create a recovery dvd in windows 8 or 8.1, it matches your software key. This is a limit designed by Microsoft, I...

    problem with OneDrive

If you have onedrive open on one device, it may not allow access on another. I ran into this with my android phone. If I'm logged in on my phone, I get access errors on my surface, and vice-versa. Seems to be a limiting factor. Perhaps turning on complete file access in Onedrive would correct...

    Weather app live tile alert

When you open the weather app, there should be a red bar towards the bottom of the first screen. Click on it and it should show you the alert. I believe the alert symbol will stay on the tile as long as it's in effect.

    Use as an alarm clock

I agree, my comments were a little terse, and I apologize. I'm old school, I use my devices to do a specific task, and enjoy turning them off when I'm done. I'm not going to pass on smelling the roses so I can see whose posting on Facebook, or check email incessantly as some people do. There's...

    Desktop Recording Software

If you're just talking audio, the free Audigy Software Download works fine on my SP1. I don't record live audio, but works fine for wav mp3 ogg, and lots of other filetypes, has decent filtering and waveform controls for loudness and equalization........

    Use as an alarm clock

I've been using an old wind-up alarm clock for 40 years, paid $5 for it, I think, never been late for work or gotten up late for anything important. If you can afford a SP3, buy a wind up alarm....

Any ideas what sort of updates will happen tomorrow 10/14/14??

The automatic updates will install and shutdown if the surface is idle (not in active use). I had 16 updates on my SP1, and had to reset security settings on metro IE 11, wouldn't startup right after the update....... All is fine now......

    Type Cover Color Popularity

I must have long fingers, my palms never touch the type cover. I have the black type cover 2, but it's more of a dark grey than black. Don't use the touchpad, use a bluetooth mouse, or the pen in tablet mode.

    Windows Update Broken?

Just to let everyone know, my windows update problem has been resolved. After no help from Microsoft's online info, I stumbled upon 3 batch files, in a windows 7 forum, that a user created to resolve a windows update problem. They worked beautifully on my SP1, fixed the problem in less than 2...

Which Micro SD card to buy

I would really recommend against formatting your microsd card to NTFS, leave it exfat if you're not going to use it for system images. I bought two sandisk 128gb class 10 cards, the first one was an ultra, had corrupt file problems with it. Now using a class 10 pixtor sandisk card, works...
