    Firmware update today

http://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/install-update-activate/pro-3-update-history Surface Pro UEFI (v3.11.760.0) adds support for enterprise disk encryption, enhances the advanced configuration settings for device security, and adds configurable support from the Windows OS for...

Portable document scanner that works with 8.1 rt???

Do you carry a smartphone? There are apps that do a pretty remarkable job of scanning using the phone's camera.

Why doesn't Microsoft default to the 4 character Pin

Group policies are often set to require the password after short time periods, or any time the device resumes from sleep, which with the Surface, is any time the screen goes off. I used the picture password for a while, but found that anything that had any kind of complexity to it, I was unable...

Why doesn't Microsoft default to the 4 character Pin

I have to wonder what kind of password policies you enforce if you've never had a user complain about passwords! Also, I had no problem with my long complex password until I tried using the Surface as an actual mobile tablet for my job. At that point, entering all those characters every time...

Why doesn't Microsoft default to the 4 character Pin

It'd still be an individual choice or just be removed by group policy so the option's not even available. It would be trivial through group policy to make those combinations off limits, and then wipe the device after 10 wrong tries (or, as a lesser measure, lock you out, or just require the full...

Why doesn't Microsoft default to the 4 character Pin

Setting a PIN does not reduce security in any meaningful way, especially if you pair it with other security measures, such as wiping the device after x number of invalid tries, or even just locking you out for 15 minutes after that time. Since the pin can be used only to log on to the device...

Why doesn't Microsoft default to the 4 character Pin

I think it does, as I agree with the OP. People expect a tablet to be able to be up and ready at an instant. Logging in with a PIN is far more secure than setting a 4 character password because the PIN does not replace your password, which is used in all sorts of other scenarios. The only thing...

    SP2 8gigs/256SSD vs SP3 4gigs/128SSD tricky one?

For me the screen aspect ratio on the SP3 makes it the clear winner even if I had to skimp on other specs. I had the SP1 and I never felt comfortable with it as either a tablet or a laptop. It was too narrow to use it in my preferred vertical orientation as a tablet, and too little height when...

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

If you have something to counteract it other than a smarmy response, please post it. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have believed it. Today, virtually every Windows user I run across is using Chrome. And, people look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them that I've switched to IE. That's why...

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

You have to lay some fault at the operating system for letting such behavior occur, however. Chrome is only one potential offender. This and every other forum that deals with devices using connected standby are filled with posts from people having excessive drain in that mode. That's Microsoft's...

    Intel Iris HD5000 Driver update (15.36.18.64.4156 = 10.18.10/14.4156)

I installed this manually yesterday. Not showing up in Windows Update, although it would be great if they were becoming more aggressive about pushing Intel's video updates. If the Intel Control Panel is there, does that mean you can drive 4k now without hacking the manual install?

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

Well, that's in an ideal situation. When I was using Chrome as my browser (which given current trends, most people are) it often used 5-6% per hour in CS (sometimes even more than that!) Further, it would be nice if the device could use even less than that 1% and not ever have to go into hibernate.

    Dual 4k monitor experiences

A few days ago my Dell P2715q developed a line of dead pixels down one side of the screen. That was unfortunate, but Dell support sent me out a replacement display. I received it today, so while I had two working displays in my possession, I hooked them both up to verify that I could get them...

dual monitor output without docking station?

Dual monitors to vga might work, or it might be problematic. You will need a displayport hub and the displayport to vga adapters. I would not be surprised if you have issues connecting to these at times though. And you'll spend almost as much as the docking station costs.

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

It is my hope that Microsoft expands the Surface line to include both i5/i7u and Core-M in different form factors - each optimized to the strength of the respective platforms. Stuffing the Core-M into the standard chassis would be counter to the point of the chip, so I hope they don't go that route.

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

Core-M is optimized to meet the needs of the average user's workflow. It can burst to very high frequencies for a short bit of time, giving performance similar to or better than much more powerful CPU's, but it cannot maintain that performance over time. This is a reasonable tradeoff for many...

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

Anandtech's review of the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro is out (using the same 5y71 processor as the new MacBook.) As said before, for many workloads, it out-performs the i5 in the SP3. http://www.anandtech.com/show/9061/lenovo-yoga-3-pro-review/4 I really can't wait until Microsoft releases a Surface...

    LG 3840x1440 on Surface Pro 3 i5

The wake issue seems to be common to displayport in general. Whether Lenovo or Microsoft we have some users with the problems and others without. With my previous monitors I had endless trouble with the Surface. Since I switched to the Dell p2715q those issues are 99% resolved.

    New Apple 12" MacBook - competition to SP3 ?

This is no netbook. In some workloads, the Core-M 5y70 used in the base MacBook outclasses the i5 in the SP3. http://www.anandtech.com/show/8515/quick-look-at-core-m-5y70-and-llama-mountain The reality is that the average student/business traveler/typical user has not been cpu-limited for many...
