help, audio will only play through speakers

might have something to do with updates, I'm not sure, but yesterday my Surface started playing audio only through the speakers, i.e.

* headphone jack does not work - plays through Surface speakers
* speakers plugged into Dock don't work - plays through Surface speakers
* hdmi connection does not deliver audio (though video works) - plays through Surface speakers

true for video clips, mp3s, Skype conversation, etc.

oddly, while docked right now if I pull up audio devices and tell it to 'test' the docked speakers that chime plays through the docked speakers, but the audio feed won't.

help?

the tech at the msft store said this was the 3rd or 4th Surface he'd seen with this problem. reinstalling Windows (i.e., "reset") solved it.

and while there, I saw the sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet 34" curved LG monitor. yum, yum...

Is the docked speakers set as the default playback device? Any output will play the chime but until it is set as default it won't output any actual audio.
