Um and why don't you have a recovery partition or backup?

If you haven't deleted the Recovery Partition from your hard drive you can just go to Settings / General / Refresh your PC without affecting your files...

Also try googling that error code.

Do you have a micro SD card in the machine?
Take it out.
My Surface Pro won't boot from the USB if there is a Micro SD in it.

Really?! Wow! Now that is odd and definitely abnormal behavior.

What type and brand is your SD card?

That is absolutely bizarre.

If you haven't already, it should be reported to Surface Support.

Well, I live in Thailand and had the SP couriered from the US, so it's not really viable.
It works fine if I take the micro SD card out, so it's not a big deal. I'm guessing that means that if I wanted to I could boot another OS off the micro SD too, which is kind of handy.
The BIOS settings seem pretty limited and don't seem to have any setting to specify the boot order.

Anyway, sorry to hijack this thread. It seems that the micro SD wasn't causing the problem in this thread.
