Sorry about the bad luck you've had, I'm on the top floor of my building and I'm able to connect to my Router in the courtyard and even in my car park, both 5 floors below... granted I'm connecting to 2.4GHz from that distance, but in my apartment I have no issues on 5GHz.

Devices on my 5GHz SSID:

3x Surface Pro 2 Tablets
2x Surface 2
Nokia Lumia 1520 and a 920
HTC 8x
Xbox One (son's room)

Connected to the 2.4GHz:

Lenovo Ideapad (used in the bedroom as a media center)
Brother HL-4070CDW Color Laser Printer
Xbox 360 (son's room)

Connected directly to the router:

Xbox One
LCD TV
NAS

Also sharing spectrum is a Netgear PTV3000 for Miracast support

At any given time it supports HD Streaming in 3 rooms and connectivity to the other devices.
