Cortana - problem?

I like the feature of Cortana! As I understand there is an option for "her" to listen and respond to "hey Cortana". In my machine (SP3) she does not! I need to click to the little microphone next to the search space at the bottom for "her" to listen!
Is this normal? Is there a way of resetting Cortana?
