The OS must keep a record of what factory as I went into the "create a recovery drive" from the control panel and was still able to make recovery drive thats over 6GB in size.

Well... I went to this site to get a recovery image: Download a recovery image for Microsoft Surface And it let me download this file finally instead of just giving me a blank page. Surface3_BMR_10_10.34.0

Not that it helps. The recovery site is letting me get the win 10 recovery image.
