One month+ update: Still going strong. I have my Onedrive photos library and music synced to the SDCard and have zero issues loading large pictures (sometimes RAW).

That sounds very much like a driver issue. Audio drivers on SP4 detect when a headphone is plugged in and switches profile. Seems like something was broken. There are a whole lot of driver issues thanks to new Intel chip. We will be seeing updates and fixes soon.
Slight deviation from your original resolutions; I recently switched from a 3 monitor setup to a a 34" ultrawide 3440x1440 with my SP3 Pro driving it over DP. It works flawlessly with no scaling issues or any lags. Crisp >4K image and *plenty* of real estate.

Right click your SD Card (or a sub folder of pictures), Add to Library > Pictures. To remove it, click Pictures in exlorer, then select "Manage library" under "File".
