Your RAM might be defective, this often causes weird and inconsistent blue screens. I would try downloading Memtest86 or a similar tool and run it. If even a single error occurs, you should have your Surface replaced.

I don't know this for direct experience, I believe that when you plug the screen nothing special happens, but if you manually log off and back on you will have the new scaling. But you should definitely wait for somebody else to answer this if you want to be sure. ;)

Clarky, just to be sure, are you aware that there are two different scaling settings? One is found in Metro and I believe it only affects Metro, the other in the desktop control panel.
