Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

I'll go ahead and copy here what I posted on Reddit. First, is yours a 15" or a 13.5"? I've only tested all of this on the 15" model and can't verify what works with the other model: Okay, so, one of my pet peeves with the Surface Book 2 is the lack of HDCP 2.2 support for external wired...

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

Quite honestly, with all of the other problems I'm having with the SB2 (battery discharge when plugged in, whenever I use the GTX 1060 on "Best performance," mouse/keyboard lag on battery power that still hasn't been resolved after so many months, the tablet disconnect problem that still...

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

Yes, it will play any 4K content that's not copy-protected.

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

The simplest answer -- and this is part of what's so frustrating about the SB2 -- is that I haven't yet come across a notebook since buying the SB2 that has NOT supported HDCP 2.2 via its USB-C (if they supported display) or Thunderbolt 3 ports. I can remember one (an inexpensive one, can't...

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

My understanding is that the SB2 simply does not support HDCP 2.2 for external wired displays. It's not fixable via firmware because that functionality simply isn't built in (hardware is required to decrypt the HDCP 2.2 copy protection, as I understand things, and that doesn't exist for external...

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

This is all a bit confused... To play premium copy-protected content at 4K (such as Netflix), everything needs to be HDCP 2.2 compliant (not HDCP 1.4). HDMI 2.0(a) is required to support HDCP 2.2. So, a TV that supports HDMI 2.0(a) and HDCP 2.2 will play Netflix @ 4K with a supported player...

Surface Dock and USB C charging

Once you've plugged in the Surface Dock, USB-C charging is disabled.

    Surface Book 2 drivers/firmware

Nope, nothing here (although Win 10 received a cumulative update on Tuesday). Some people on Reddit responded that those updates were for Insider machines, and that's what I'm inclined to think. If you did get them (a whole bunch of updates, not just one) on a non-Insider machine, then I'll be...

    Official Windows 10 Insiders thread

Sorry, didn't quite follow your logic there... Which systems were and were not updated with the latest drivers/firmware?

SB2 15 inch, Graphics card disappearing when waking up or reboot

I experience similar issues on my SB2 15", and I've applied all of these fixes. I've seen two three versions: 1. The dGPU and base battery disappear. 2. The dGPU only disappears. 3. The base battery only disappears. Has anybody else seen all three of these scenarios?

    Surface Book 2 drivers/firmware

Some people posted in the last week or so about a slew of SB2 driver and firmware updates. Mine hasn't yet received them, and I'm wondering if they're for Insider builds or all systems. Has anyone not on an Insider build received the updates?

Charging through USB-C doesn't always work

To be perfectly precise, the shipping SB2 15" charger provides 95 watts to the system (7 watts is reserved for the USB port). So a 100 watt USB-C charger theoretically provides more power than the shipping charger.

    Official Windows 10 Insiders thread

Were these updates just pushed to Insiders? I remember hearing about a large firmware/driver update, and it hasn't shown up on my SB2 15". Perhaps that's because I'm not on the Insider builds?

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

I'm standing by my editorial, and I fully understand what's required for premium copy-protected content via HDCP 2.2. How about this: plug your Surface Book 2 into your compliant TV, play Netflix on Edge via the USB-C port, and send me a video of the screen showing 4K streaming via the...

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

Actually, you're wrong. The Surface Book 2 only supports HDCP 1.4 to wired external displays. That's the entire point of (that part of) my piece. You can tell if Netflix is playing 4k by hitting CTL-SHIFT-ALT-D with the Netflix window in the foreground -- do that, and you'll see that it's...

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

Thought I'd circle back on this one... The reason why the SB2 can't play Netflix at 4K (or any premium copy-protected content) is simple: the SB2 only supports HDCP 1.4 to external wired displays. HDCP 2.2 is required for premium copy-protected content.

Surface Book 2 15" and Netflix 4K video on external monitor

This popped up in the external display thread, but I wanted to promote it on its own. Here's the situation: I recently bought a Dell Ultrasharp U2718Q 27" monitor at Costco, great deal at $380. I'm using it connected to my SB2 15" using Microsoft's Surface USB-C to HDMI adapter. It connects at...

SB2/Surface Dock - Max External Monitors Supported

I noticed that as well, but it's not the issue (and note that it lists user strings for a number of browsers, including Edge, on that line). The Acer shows the same thing, and it plays 4K no problem. So, there's something else going on, and it doesn't give me any warm and fuzzies.

SB2/Surface Dock - Max External Monitors Supported

So, I've been working on the 4K Netflix thing, and I'm getting frustrated. Any chance you could fire up Netflix in Edge, assuming you have the 4K plan, and use Ctl-Shift-Alt-D to check the bitrate and resolution? That pops up an overlay that shows that information and more for Netflix video. You...

    SB2 15" battery capacity

Is Microsoft still recommending that? Seems counter-intelligent considering how it's full cycles that cause wear. But I'll give it a shot, thanks.
