You can't "split" USB in the traditional sense. You need a Hub. Some devices draw signifiant power from the USB bus like external hard drives, so they may need a powered port.

I'm getting the same thing. Linksys router in AP mode at 5GHz 802.11n. Surface reports it as 802.11a @244Mbps. My 2.4GHz router reports as 802.11n. Speeds are OK, appears to be a typo in the driver that makes all 5GHz networks 802.11a. 11a only goes to 54Mbps.
