A solution for my 4 hour battery life problem

Okay guys, did a little more digging and its not just live tiles that are able to run in the background. There are a whole set of applications which can run in the background to give you notifications! To check them out: Charms Menu, Settings, Change PC Settings, Search and apps...

A solution for my 4 hour battery life problem

Are these the "lock screen applications" with notifications activated? or is there another list of applications somewhere that I need to disable this. Out of that list I only use Facebook and Weather on the lockscreen which seems to allow them to continue to pull data even if the live tile is...

A solution for my 4 hour battery life problem

There isn't an easy way to work this out. But if you press winkey + X and start task manager. In one of the tabs you can see (and sort by) live tile data usage. I just worked out that my 2 tv tiles and metrotube were downloading around 5mb per hour. While that doesn't sound like a lot, remember...

A solution for my 4 hour battery life problem

Hi All, I had previously been racking my brains trying to figure out why on earth I was constantly getting less than 4 hours battery life with just web browsing and why my surface was hotter than the surface of the sun from just web browsing. Obviously I've disabled intel powerboost on battery...

    Surface Pro 2 i5-4200u with HD4400 VS Sony Vaio tap11 i7-4610Y with HD4200 Gaming???

Although on paper the Sony may turbo boost to a higher CPU clock, I don't think this will translate to gaming performance. If we're talking software heavy, CPU games, if the can't run on the i5-4200U I doubt they would run on lower performance phone hardware. In terms of games which actually...

    Windows Media Player

Go into the control panel, default programs and enable WMP as the default player for all video filetypes. In my experience its the best video player in terms of battery efficiency (around 10-15% saving compared even to Xbox Video).

    Surface Pro 2 CPU

I think you're right - the performance boost mostly comes from the graphics 20 EUs vs 16 EUs rather than the CPU itself. I'm thinking at base clock the Haswell architecture will easily make up for the 0.1GHz speed drop (but with a minor although probably not noticeable speed increase). In turbo...

Sony VAIO Tap 11 : Thinner Haswell Surface Pro

The problem for me with the Tap 11 is that it runs an i5-4210Y processor (at least in base spec) . Unfortunately, no where near as fast as the Ivy Bridge based i5-3317U in the Surface Pro. The i7-4610Y Tap 11 will be very interesting though, although no battery life specs have been released for...

Battery Life and Video Player - Yes it does seem to matter

I presume using the default windows media player codecs? or are you using a custom codec package? That is not the use case I am getting at all. I've updated my post with the updated data. Edit: Scratch that... WMP12 is epic when decoding H264. Granted that .3 W difference only results in an...

Battery Life and Video Player - Yes it does seem to matter

Just did the same test for H264 video and I get these results: Xbox Video - 9.3W Windows Media Player 12 - 8.7W !!! VLC - 9.8W MPC-HC - 11W The results are fairly consistent and I've tried a couple of videos now. So if you are catching a plane and marathon battery timing is crucial, I...
