New Intel drivers posted today (4080)

Good tip. By the way, there's a 90MB Surface Pro 3 firmware update available in Windows Update today. After installing it, I reverted the graphics driver back to this 4080 version by doing the following: Open Device Manger "Update Driver Software..." on display adapter Browse my computer for...

External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

The 25" monitor you mentioned has 117.5 DPI which would require 122.4% DPI scaling in Windows to be physically accurate. If you manually set your DPI to 125%, it would work. This will make things pretty small on the SP3 though (automatic DPI scaling on SP3 is 150%).

    Best Music Player

There is a third party Google Music Windows Store app that even lets you download Google Music tracks for offline playback: http://apps.microsoft.com/webpdp/app/939f0859-1413-4a52-9ab6-6e50405c8c2e I've been using it for almost a year and it's been pretty stable. Enjoy!

    Post Your SP3 Non-Docked Operating Resolution & Scaling %

Haha, sorry about that. I get a little bit angry about this subject as I feel Microsoft did not do a good job with Windows 8.1's scaling "improvements". When enough people claim they are happy with the way they've implemented it, they have a very good excuse to not improve it. As a C#/WPF...

    Post Your SP3 Non-Docked Operating Resolution & Scaling %

Native resolution (2160 x 1440), 175% DPI scaling (using "Windows XP" style scaling). Microsoft's automatic DPI calculation for the SP3 screen is 150% scaling, but I find that too small. The next automatic step up from 150% is 200%, but I find that a little too large at normal usage distance...

External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

Honestly, most monitors work happily with the Surface. The issue here is Windows 8.1 multi-monitor DPI scaling problems. If you're willing to log out/log in every time you dock/undock the surface, you can get by. I use a 24" 16x10 Dell at work. The newest model is: UltraSharp 24 Monitor –...

External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

50hz is fine for me so far. I'd prefer 60hz, but it's not working yet. For comparison, I've used 30hz on the older 4k panels and found it unusable. I highly doubt you'd have an issue with 50hz.

External Display? 1440p or 4k? 24" or 27" ? What would you suggest?

I've gone through three different 4k monitors in search of the ideal external monitor for the Surface Pro 3. - Samsung U28D590D (28" TN) - Asus PB287Q (28" TN) - Dell P2715Q (27" IPS) Hands down, without any reservation, I recommend the Dell P2715Q. The IPS screen on this monitor is night and...

4K not working on Samsung U28D590D

The Surface Pro 3 doesn't have the bandwidth required to run 4k at 60hz through its mini DisplayPort output. 50hz is a compromise to run at 4k as 4k 50hz is just under the maximum bandwidth supported by the Surface's mini DisplayPort output. The main reason I need a 4k monitor is to run the...

4K not working on Samsung U28D590D

The reason I need a 4k monitor is because Windows 8.1 is terrible at handling multiple DPI's between monitors on desktop programs. A 28 inch 4k monitor works well at. 150-175% DPI scaling - the same range of DPI scaling that the Surface's screen works well at. If I lock my DPI at one of these...

    Solidworks and Surface Pro 3

I also use "Disable display scaling on high DPI" with SolidWorks. I have been very impressed with the performance of SolidWorks on my i5 8GB RAM Surface. Recently, I picked up a Samsung U28D590D 4k monitor and applied a custom resolution via the Intel graphics utility to achieve 4k @ 50Hz...

4K not working on Samsung U28D590D

Thank you for sharing these steps. I tried it on a co-worker's monitor at work and it worked after a little fiddling. After creating the custom resolution in Intel's graphics panel, I tried to apply the resolution and it didn't do anything. I then re-read your instructions and cleared "Hide...

surface pro 3 w/i7 fonts on 2nd monitor fuzzy ?

The fuzzy fonts on external monitors are caused by Windows 8.1 multiple monitor DPI scaling. Here is Microsoft's description: http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2013/07/15/windows-8-1-dpi-scaling-enhancements/ A work around is to log off and log on to Windows while the external screen is...

    Larger Bluetooth Keyboard?

The Thinkpad Bluetooth keyboard is marginally wider than the Surface Pro 3. I'd say it is ruffly .25 inch wider. I like it a lot more than the Type Cover. The keys have a lot more throw. The shortcut keys all work well too.

    Larger Bluetooth Keyboard?

I use the ThinkPad Compact Bluetooth Keyboard with TrackPoint. I'm one of the few people that actually prefer a TrackPoint to a touchpad.
