Edit: after disabling the auto contrast feature and rebooting it did not work first time, someone else said enable it and reboot again then disable and only then did I notice it was fully off.

Approximately 20-30 minutes on a full charge or thereabouts - still monitoring though. Definitely decreases quicker but not alarmingly so. Nothing else has changed, so the dynamic contrast definitely is a power saving feature. On the plus side contrast is improved.

Granted, on my 2011 MacBook air running parallels VM's, 4gb of RAM simply wasn't enough, and upgrading to a MacBook Pro retina with 8gb solved those issues. However in the absence of needing that, my Surface is running perfectly.

Is restoring from a recovery image (clean setup) an option at all ? Not quick but at least then you have a baseline point to see if it does it from factory default, then run all updates and monitor.
