I think the menu implementation is good the way it is. Click on a menu button and the tools drop down. Resizing will mess things up in my opinion.

Run the program, it doesn't need installation, it puts a small customizable button on your screen that you can hold and move to scroll pages while writing with the pen

What's the big deal about the cover waking up the device? Just open the thing and if the screen doesn't turn on, press a button on the KB or the touchpad. This is ridiculous. Mine doesn't wake up the screen but who cares?

Problem is on a Surface deeply embedded in the MS ecosystem, running without office365 and the OneDrive integration is an incomplete experience IMHO. Haven't used OpenOffice so I can't speak about the experience.

I don't really think the tiles look huge at that setting. Actually I think it is the best setting. Everything looks proportionate, but different strokes for different folks.
