DP++ can transmits DVI/HDMI signals as well as DP (so a passive adapter is enough). DP transmits DP only; it requires an *active* adapter to convert DP signals to DVI/HDMI.

Update: Shortening the cables seems to have had some effect. Instead of 1*2m (SP3 to screen 1) and 1*1m (daisy-chain) I now have 2*0.5m cables... While this might be some placebo effect, it almost appears as if the SP3 at boot is able to recognise both screens a bit better... Still...

Except for some finicky behaviour with respect to connecting multiple displays I have to say my SP3 has been rock solid so far :-)

Microsoft have confirmed that they are aware of the issues and working on a fix. I have been added to a notification list for an early notice when they have it fixed.
