    Intel slowdown

It's a great time to be AMD.

    Intel slowdown

So far, I'm finding battery use to be roughly equivalent to Edge. Nothing scientific, but the average mW drain is similar (using BatteryBar to eyeball things). Even if it were worse, I'd still continue to use Firefox for the performance benefits. Not only is browsing much faster, but the...

    Intel slowdown

As I previously noted, when I load up Edge with the same tabs and apps open, my RAM usage exceeds 10GB and sometimes jumps up to as much as 15GB. When I load up Firefox with the same, RAM usage never exceeds about 7.5GB. At least on my machine, Edge is broken. Edit: Just loaded up Chrome as...

    Intel slowdown

That's possible. I'll add this: Edge in general has really slowed down for me, and not just on my SB2. I think Microsoft also updated it to mitigate for Meltdown (I think that's the one that can use the browser to exploit). I'm fairly certain that Edge wasn't doubling RAM use prior to the...

    Intel slowdown

I'm running a little experiment. One thing that I noticed and commented on in the thread I started specific to the touchpad/keyboard lag is that it seemed to be caused by Edge. Then I backed away from that, because it seemed to be occurring independent of Edge. Now I'm thinking it might...

    Intel slowdown

I wish I could say the same. At times, the touchpad is literally unusable because I can't hit a very precise spot. That lasts for a couple of seconds at a time, revolves, and then comes back. I'm really curious though why some people would see the issues and others wouldn't.

    Intel slowdown

Okay, I wanted to resurrect this thread because my opinion of the patch effects has completely changed. Since my 15" SB2 1TB received the firmware update, it has been a hot mess of performance issues. First, the touchpad and keyboard are now lagging like crazy, both on battery and when plugged...

About to get SB2 13"-worried about coil whine!

According to most accounts (and my own experience), the 15" units typically have very little coil whine. If the third person here has a 13", then either it's a winner in the coil whine lottery or Microsoft has resolved something.

    SB2 15 intermittent touchpad/keyboard lag

Quick update: apparently, it's happening when Edge is open and sites are open (such as this one, ironically) -- even when Edge isn't in the foreground. Close Edge, and it doesn't seem to recur. Weird. Edit: Strike that, it's not Edge. But it's definitely annoying.

    SB2 15 intermittent touchpad/keyboard lag

Does anyone else have slight touchpad/keyboard lag intermittently, as in every few seconds or so (but not regularly)? It's basically a rubber band-like effect when moving the mouse (which makes it hard to hit specific spots on occasion) and the keyboard falls just slightly behind (causing...

    Nvidia drivers

So, a quick (maybe) question: if one installs the Nvidia and Intel drivers, how hard is it to roll back to using the Microsoft-issued drivers?

CPU Throttling on 15 inch Surface Book 2 after 1709?

Other people know more about this than me, but I'll note that my SB2 15" has never hit 100c and has maxed out at 92c in all of my testing. I'd be suspicious of a machine that hits 100c at any point, that seems to be an indication with some other people here of a problematic machine.

    Coil Whine SB2 15"

I've done some testing on this, with a couple of SB2 15" machines and one 13.5". My experience parallels what others are reporting (google "Surface Book 2 13 coil whine"): 1. On all of the machines that have it (which I believe is most if not all SB2s), the coil whine is loudest when plugged in...

Ordered my Surface Book 2 yesterday. Almost 300.00 Discount

Yeah, unfortunately, the 15" models all show as out of stock at the moment.

    Intel slowdown

My understanding is that Linux is severely affected by the issue. So that might not provide much relief.

    Intel slowdown

Yes, we've seen Passmark on the SP3 only though, right? And that's Haswell, and so we would expect to see a significant decrease there. I'd love to see pre- and post-firmware tests on a Skylake-based Surface, which according to Microsoft would show a less significant change.

Ordered my Surface Book 2 yesterday. Almost 300.00 Discount

First, do you have any kind of educational or military discount? That's what shows up when I log in (I have both). Second, I tried to order a 15" 512GB version yesterday and my order was cancelled because the machine was "out of stock." So maybe that was just a glitch? Or maybe you ordered...

    Intel slowdown

I believe Microsoft has been testing the OS patch in Windows Insider builds since November. At least, that's what I read somewhere. So it's possibel you've already been using your Insider machines with the patch installed and didn't know it.

    Intel slowdown

So, I think we know now why the SP3 showed the kind of performance decreases noted in the post above. Microsoft has stated that systems based on Haswell and earlier CPUs will show more significant performance decreases. Systems based on Skylake and later will show much less significant...
