Yes it's very confusing. When I updated my Surface Pro 3 pen to the Surface pro 4 version I had to cancel the order due to a problem and Microsoft sales re-ordered me the incorrect type and I got sent the same version I already had.
On the UK store the older version without different tips is...
It has to be an active pen. I believe there is a HTC pen that works and someone posted so.e Chinese rip offs a while back.
When you say "only interested" that's what most people do with the genuine pen... Lol. Try looking for a secondhand pro3 pen from someone who has upgraded to pro 4 version.
Oh I'd seen a few on Win 7 on my work PC's. I couldn't get Defender to activate again so I did a reset. First time I've reset my Surface since I got it. Defender is starting OK now thankfully.
I'm using a SP3 i7 for all the things you describe and have been for a year, I haven't been that tempted to upgrade.
I have updated to the new typecover and pen, both were good but the new ones are a massive improvement.
I personally use the pen loop, it does the job very well for me. I attach it to the inner side of the keyboard just right of the trackpad so the pen sits on the long edge. My old one stayed on for a year no problem. When I changed to sp4 type cover I put it in the same place only now its even...

Are you using the Sp3 or SP4 pen? Mine has always worked without issue so I haven't got an answer for you except to make sure you have the correct drivers installed I manually update to the Sp4 drivers after getting the SP4 pen, although the pen worked fine it enabled the Surface App config...
Well they are not all the same as there's plenty of people here with i5s without overheating problems. Its difficult for anyone to help without information about what programs are running and what your configuration is.
Its likely it was downloading updates which was why it was getting hot so...
Ok that does sound serious. My i7 sometimes gets hot but usually only when downloading updates/ doing processor intensive work and it has never shut down through heat.
Can you look in the task manager and see what's running when it starts to get hot? What services/programs are active and using...
Never had one on Windows 8 or 10 before so I don't know what they look like but I guess this is wahat a BSOD looks like now, that I got today?
So do I need o do anything? I was just thinking that my surface pro 3 was running pretty well recently with little fan noise and stunning...
