it's so that when you're holding it like a tablet, your type cover presses won't get registered. honestly I don't like holding my SP3 with the type cover folded back because I just don't like the sensation on my fingers that I'm pressing something everytime I move my hand

I'm sorry but I don't know if it will be more noticeable with a black cover. the felt might be thick enough so that even if a thin layer is removed, there's still a few layers left.

It doesn't look slightly bald at all. I could hardly tell the difference, if there is any, even if I touch it. I think the felt covering is thick enough so that even if a thin layer is stripped off, it won't be noticeable.

When I got my SP3 from the courier, I opened the box and it had no cushions or whatsoever. the box it came on was like twice the thickness of the box of the SP3 so I imagine my SP3 was bouncing around all the time while being shipped. I was amazed it was working fine when I opened it.

It may depend on the model but when I tried installing 76 updates on my i3 model, it died midway of overheating. It still worked after the restart though. So uhh...Don't freak out when that happens :D
