New Hardware Update: Is This The ONE?

Another possibility is to use Hibernate, which takes a lot less time to rev up than a cold boot. You can change your settings to add Hibernate to your Power menu, so you can hibernate instead of shut down, or you could change it so that your SB hibernates when you close the lid or push the power...

    Surface Book Behaving Better

Agreed. As long as I have acceptable reliability, I'm okay with waiting for Microsoft to fix the problems with the SB. Without basic reliability or functionality, obviously, the situation is different, and I would be doing (and have spent countless hours doing) whatever is necessary to get the...

    Surface Book Behaving Better

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm going to hold off on that for now because I have learned not to fix stuff that isn't broken. If my SB is working well now, I'm not going to muck around with it. If I run into more problems, I will probably try the DISM rebuild process, but at this point I'm...

    Surface Book design problem?

That's interesting - that Microsoft promotional image clearly shows the closest hinge section as being on the same plane as the base. On my SB, and on yours (to a larger degree), that is definitely not the case. Accordingly, I would conclude that this is indeed a manufacturing defect. Failure...

    Surface Book Behaving Better

My SB (no dGPU) has been behaving fairly well for the past several days. This represents a significant improvement, since I have rarely had several days in a row where I have not had to troubleshoot something on my SB. On the whole, my Surface Book experience has been characterized by...

    Surface Book design problem?

Here is a picture at an angle closer to the angle of your picture. You can see the the difference in vertical alignment of the hinge sections is much less pronounced than in your picture, although the closest section does dip down somewhat (which is why there is some slight scratching on it)...

    Surface Book design problem?

It's almost flush - that is, the closest hinge section and the base are almost touching the desk, but I have checked it with a magnifier and the rubber strip is definitely touching the desk. I may have some slight scratching on the closest hinge section - you can kind of see it as a white dotted...

    Surface Book design problem?

My hinge appears uniform across its articulations and the rubber strip on the bottom remains in contact with the desk top. The desk top is glass, so it is perfectly flat. And I have no scratches on the bottom of my SB, despite moderate use as a laptop on a variety of surfaces.

    Solved My SP4 just self-destructed

As if those are mundane options. I'm so sick and tired of being told to reset or reinstal Windows for every little problem, as if it's no big deal. Not everyone has two days to reinstal their OS and put everything back to the way it was, even if they can remember how everything was. This is 2016...

Camera does not turn on during startup after update

My Windows Hello stopped working again today, after the reset got it working for a while. I'm getting pretty damned tired of troubleshooting this brand new expensive computer every two days.

How far does $400 million go?

Seriously, you are arguing that not being clear on a laptop whether Airplane Mode is on or off is a mere cosmetic annoyance? You must not travel very much. And if that defect doesn't do it for you, how about the Surface Book crashing and freezing constantly? Or the graphics drivers crashing...

How far does $400 million go?

The NFL campaign basically highlighted the Surface's defects on national TV. Players and coaches said the Surfaces didn't work. The Surface was blamed (unfairly) for changing the outcome of a playoff game. Numerous Surfaces were shown with blank screens, while frustrated players and coaches were...

How far does $400 million go?

The magic of the iPod, in my mind, was that it was just so darned easy to use. Get music and listen to it. That's it. Even after people could download any music for free, the iPod remained wildly popular because it worked. My grandmother could use an iPod right out of the box. The iPod was not...

How far does $400 million go?

My criticism is not that MS made a bad bet. My criticism is that MS has misplaced its priorities. MS has clearly chosen to prioritize spending on promotion instead of product development. The goal appears to be a cynical one: persuade people that your product is great, at the expense of actually...

How far does $400 million go?

Microsoft paid the NFL $400 million to promote the Surface. The campaign was, by every account, a complete and utter failure. I don't know how much Microsoft software engineers make, but if they make say $80,000 a year, that means the $400 million Microsoft spent promoting the Surface could have...

New Hardware Update: Is This The ONE?

I had a Blackberry Playbook, which was another tablet that was introduced as an "iPad killer". The Playbook, like the Surface Book, was plagued from the beginning with hardware and software issues. After about a year, with thousands of frustrated users and lackluster support, the Playbook was...

Camera does not turn on during startup after update

Removing Windows Hello, restarting, and then setting it up again worked for me (although on the very first restart I had to tell Windows sign-in options to use the camera). After the first restart, Windows Hello seems to work as it is supposed to. To remove Windows Hello, go to Settings...

New Hardware Update: Is This The ONE?

Honestly, how tough is it for Microsoft engineers to turn these icons off when BT or Airplane Mode is turned off (or a BT adapter is not even installed)? Every phone ever made does this perfectly, but Microsoft can't get its flagship operating system to do it. How is that even possible?
