    Surface Book 2 - will you buy/upgrade?

Don't hold your breath on the reviews as far as the type of SSDs that are being deployed. When MS sent out the original SBs to reviewers, all the machines had high end Toshiba SSDs. When MS shipped actual units to consumers, they replaced the high end Toshiba SSDs with pedestrian Samsung SSDs...

Sleep not working Fall creators update

Disabling hibernate from the command line should delete hiberfil.sys. If hibernate was previously enabled, then you should have had a hiberfil.sys file. Perhaps it was never enabled, in which case the file would never have been created (or deleted). Or maybe it was stored on a different drive...

external monitor only works with clipboard detached

Try this: When the screen is attached, go into Settings, Tablet Mode. See if your SB is set to switch automatically to Tablet Mode when the screen is detached. Try different settings, to see if you can get the SB to avoid switching to Tablet Mode when the screen is detached. If that changes the...

external monitor only works with clipboard detached

I would first try a different brand of cable. Sometimes connections can be fussy about the cable used. What happens if you connect the monitor to the tablet and then reattach the tablet while the SB and monitor are both on? If the monitor disconnects, then it's probably something happening when...

Sleep not working Fall creators update

Do a search for hiberfil.sys and delete it if you find it. It's a giant file.

Sleep not working Fall creators update

Also, if you don't use Hibernate at all, you can disable it and delete the hiberfil.sys file, which will give you back a ton of SSD space.

Sleep not working Fall creators update

Sleep and hibernate on the SB, as with many Windows 10 devices, has generally been brutal. The first batch of SB's had horrible problems with sleep and hibernate, often refusing to wake from either one. Pressing the power button to wake would be consistent with Sleep or Hibernate. The...

    Surface Book 2 - will you buy/upgrade?

My first SB was a disaster. My refurb warranty replacement was way, way better, but Word still crashes randomly when I close one of two or more open Onedrive documents. I love the form factor and the 2-in-1 works beautifully, but the inability of Microsoft hardware to run a suite of Microsoft...

Sleep not working Fall creators update

Sleep is supposed to wake up if a key is pressed or the mouse is moved. It sounds like you're talking about hibernate which is a deeper sleep, in essence. What do you have set under Power Options, Change when the computer sleeps?

My Surface will not start, freq problem

If your SB is still under warranty, I would strongly recommend getting a replacement. In my experience, this problem of random shutdowns is hardware related and will not go away.

Will there be a Surface Book 2

Consumer Reports just pulled their recommendation for the Surface Book and cannot recommend any other Microsoft laptops or tablets because of poor predicted reliability in comparison with other brands. They estimate, based on annual user surveys, that 25% of Surface Book owners will have...

    Case; Skin; or Bare

On my first SB I had the stickerboy graphite combo 2 and it looked really nice. Really different and I liked the texture. It did kind of trap crumbs in the texture now and then, but it wasn't a big deal. There were a few edges I had to razor blade off after a while, but again no big deal. When...

    Turning Surface Book on

If the screen is black, but the keys light up when you press them, I had the same problem (as did many, many others). If you search for my posts here, you will see my trials and tribulations with this issue. There are a million things you can try, but in the end I had to return mine to MS for...

    Problems with Office 2016

Same problem again today. Two documents open in Word. Closed one document, no problem. Closed the other document, Word not responding.

    Problems with Office 2016

I have tried Office programs with and without hardware acceleration disabled. No difference. The only issue I have is that sometimes when I close a file the program will crash. Other than that, all the Office programs work fine. I have not had a problem since I manually updated Office in the...

    Problems with Office 2016

I'm not sure which version I'm running TBH. When I click on Office Account in Outlook, there is an option for updates, so I think that means I am running Click2Run. However, interestingly, when I clicked on updates, it is now installing updates (even though Windows is set up auto update for all...

    Problems with Office 2016

Is anyone else having problems running Office 2016 on their SB? When I use Excel, PowerPoint and Word, the SB will often crash when I close a file, especially a file that I have opened from One Drive. Since I store most of my stuff on One Drive, this has become very inconvenient. I have...

    Surface Book Sleep Issues!

If you are losing that much battery when in sleep mode, that's a defect. That was happening to my original SB. I got it replaced and no longer have that problem. You should be able to leave it in sleep for a couple of days and only lose 10-20% battery.

    Surface Book Sleep Issues!

Try leaving the SB in sleep undocked. That will isolate whether the problem is related to the dock and/or the USB devices connected to the dock. If the SB will not sleep properly when undocked, I would exchange it immediately. My SB never slept properly and there was nothing that could fix it...

My Surface Book Keeps Turning On In My Bag (Even after I turn it off!)

I found that certain updates would fix the problem, temporarily, and then subsequent updates would make it worse. In the end, with all updates installed, the problem still occurred fairly regularly. I believe that units suffering from this problem have a hardware defect and must be replaced.
