    Official Windows 10 Insiders thread

Build 15042 stole my Apps I have four machines on the Fast Ring. Three of them upgraded to 15042 with no issues. On the fourth machine, almost all of my apps disappeared -- gone not only from the Start menu, but also from the All Apps listing on the left side. Almost all of the Windows...

How to change yourself as admin on Windows 10

AnPeter -- This is not responsive to your title question, but addresses your issue. That has happened to me a few times for reasons I have never known. My solution has been to "Take Ownership" of those files/folders using a registry hack. It is available here...

    Surface Pro3 Salvage?

Thanks, Jeff. I think I will salvage it -- if for nothing else, just to see how I can take it apart. I will find some future use for the drive. I live alone, and computers are my main rainy-day hobby, so I'm always building something. Merry Christmas, Russ

    Surface Pro3 Salvage?

My son gave me a Surface Pro3 that had been dropped -- apparently from a very high altitude, given the extent of damage. I managed to get it working again, but it's limitations make it useless for me. It has no touch functions, thus requiring an external keyboard and mouse to use it. It is...

    Build 14965 Problems

Thank you. Given the rather dramatic effect it had on my computer, I opted to give it more prominence. Regards, Russ

I have four machines on Insider Fast Ring. One of them just updated to Build 14965. * I lost all but 3 apps from my Start Screen * There are no Windows programs on the All Apps list * Cannot find Feedback Hub by searching Settings * Lost 3 apps from Taskbar At this moment, I have no idea...

How to find which program is using most space on disk?

arbj -- If you are running Win10 and have had an OS update, you probably have a windows.old folder which can be as large as 20G. Use Disk Cleanup to remove it. Disk Cleanup is located in Windows Administrative Tools. When you start the program, in the lower left corner is a button for "Clean...

    Stuck on Build 14316

This is just an FYI post, because I have not been able to solve the non-problem and have chosen not to care anymore. I have four machines on the Insider Program -- Fast Ring. Three of them are on Build 14342, while one is stuck on 14316. The update settings are the same on all four machines...

Upgrade from windows 8.1 to Win10

Just finished uneventful upgrade of Ladyfriend's SP3 from 8.1 to Win10, using USB with 10240. No apparent issues. Am now installing the 10586 update before I return it to her. Don't expect any problems, but will post them if any. Regards, Russ

    (Solved)No 5.1 Surround Sound option

Hi, Kris -- There should be more options on that interface, e.g., Speaker configuration. Have you tried settings (the gear icon) or other choices on the dropdown for "Set Default Device." This is what mine looks like on a P9X79 Deluxe, which is my shop computer: That is with Driver...

    (Solved)No 5.1 Surround Sound option

Kris -- 1. I can run either 7.1 or 5.1 and get sound on both. 2. I am running it on an Asus Z-87 Deluxe. Download link is: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z87DELUXE/HelpDesk_Download/ I got there through my registered product status. 3. That is obviously crap -- sounds like Apple...

    (Solved)No 5.1 Surround Sound option

Kris -- Not really. I am running Realtek 7.1 Surround Optical out to my Denon amp. It also has a 5.1 option. I see that you have Realtek disabled. Have you tried it? I also have Nvidia option, but prefer Realtek. Regards, Russ

How do you install Windows 10 on a new Hard Drive

Leeshor -- Last year a (very) nearby lightning strike damaged MBs in three of my computers and I had to replace them. In each case, I had to use the 800 number activation system and it was clean and simple. In my experience, you can change hard drives without triggering anything. I do that a...

    Solved Cannot Verify Microsoft Account

GreyFox -- Well, this is embarrassing. The problem is solved, but I cannot explain how or why. The things I did seemed not to help, and should not have fixed the problem -- but something did. * I found some suggested Registry edits that might help the problem. Before I embarked on them, I...

    Solved Cannot Verify Microsoft Account

GreyFox -- I posted in the Win10 Insider forum. Maybe someone there can help. I think it is something unique to the machine, because I have six other systems working just fine. Thanks, Russ

    Solved Cannot Verify Microsoft Account

Windows 10, Build 10240 My Account page says "You need to verify your identity." When I click the blue Verify button, I get a gray box that lingers for a few seconds, then disappears. If I click it again, the same thing happens. I can go to "Manage My Microsoft Account," and all seems to be...

What does everyone think of Edge?

Scotty -- Time will tell, but it's not there yet -- at least for me. It is probably a quirk in my system (Win10, 10240), but all I ever get is "This page is having a problem," then Edge closes. I'm sure it is a solvable problem, but I just haven't any interest in solving it. I use Firefox as...

    History of Microsoft Windows Infographic

Yeah, no kidding! I remember with Windows 1 & 2, every time we bought a new (non-IBM) PC, it came with Windows on disk. One of our gals in Accounting used to collect them, reformat and relabel them to use for data disks. Saved a lot of money that way. :-) Windows 3 was good. Win3.1 was the...
