Not sure what happened to with the OP but this fixed my problem. My Windows button on the tablet stopped working. I tried rebooting with not luck. I resigned myself to reinstalling the OS but saw this thread. A hard reset fixed the Windows start button. Thanks!!

That's a possibility. Also, it might be that Windows updates are being downloaded at start up. This would be cause for increased disk performance and would explain why it doesn't happen all the time.

+1 (kinda) I tried this just to see. I got the same results the first time I tried it. But, subsequent power offs/one with the Micro SD card in do not have the same results. It only happened the first time.

Yes, I had that problem as well. It actually caused my SP to turn on while in my bag and drain my battery. I would recommend that you that you return it if you still can and get the Bluetooth Arc mouse. The Arc mouse will turn off when you straighten it out.
